Math Therapy
Math Therapy explores the root causes of math trauma, and the empowering ways we can heal from it. Each week host Vanessa Vakharia, aka The Math Guru, dives into what we get right and wrong about math education, and chats with some of today’s most inspiring and visionary minds working to make math more accessible, diverse, and fun for students of all ages. Whether you think you’re a "math person" or not, you’re about to find out that math people don’t actually exist – but the scars that math class left on many of us, definitely do. And don’t worry, no calculators or actual math were involved in the making of this podcast ;)

Bonus: What's your sign? (Vanessa has no clue)
Given how much Vanessa talks about astrology on the podcast, what do you think her success rate was for guessing the star signs of all the guests last season? Today's episode (guest "hosted" by producer David) reveals all ... and also drops some hints about what to expect from this podcast in the coming months!

Hello Math therapy listeners. It's David, Vanessa's producer, and I'm back with another bonus episode and some big news for the podcast. It's been a year since we wrapped up season six, and it's been six months since we shared a few bonus episodes around Vanessa's book launch last fall. Now, this may come as a surprise, but Vanessa doesn't actually like to brag about accomplishments, so I'll do it for her. Math Therapy the book has had an incredible response, and I can tell that it's just getting started. Teachers all over the map have been implementing her strategies in the classroom, and she keeps hearing about book clubs discussing Math Therapy, which is something she never expected. Now, if you were listening back in season five, you'll recall a bonus episode I put together featuring all of Vanessa's awkward interview endings. That was the year she somehow forgot how to say goodbye at the end of an episode. I'll link that in this episode description if you want to re-listen, because it was hilarious. So many listeners loved that episode that when we started recording interviews for season six, Vanessa decided that she was now the producer, and that the end of season bonus episode was going to be a compilation of her guessing everyone's astrological signs. And if you've listened to any of this podcast, I'm sure that none of that sentence will come as a surprise to you. Long story short, I never got around to release sifting through them, but we randomly recorded a couple interviews recently that we're going to share this month. So I thought this was a good time to revisit, and I discovered that they were pretty amusing, mostly because she was rarely correct. And finally, whether you're a longtime listener or a new follower, if you've wondered why we aren't popping up in your feed every week, well Vanessa is going to have some exciting news to share about that this month as well. Until then, here is Vanessa trying often quite loudly and unsuccessfully to guess some star signs.
Vanessa Vakharia:I mean, normally I would save this for the end, but I kind of want to start by guessing your astrological sign. Should I wait? I'm going to wait. I'm going to wait. No, because I'm not, I'm not certain yet, but I just, I'm feeling such a good vibe from you. this is not relevant at all. So I'm going to wait and it's going to come to me. Okay, let us begin. I really, really love this idea. And I completely lost my train of thought. So what was it? Hold on. Hold on. I was like ready to ask you a question, but I got distracted because I decided you were a Capricorn. Am I right? Are you a Capricorn? Don't tell me. I get the rest of the podcast. Wow. This has been so, I could talk to you forever, This has just been such a lovely, hopeful talk. And I think I know your astrological sign now.
Pamela Seda:I don't think so but go ahead
Vanessa Vakharia:Pisces. You're a Pisces. You're a Pisces.
Pamela Seda:Nope
Vanessa Vakharia:you a Gemini?
Pamela Seda:Nope.
Vanessa Vakharia:Are you a Cancer?
Pamela Seda:No.
Vanessa Vakharia:What are you? A Libra?
Pamela Seda:No!
Vanessa Vakharia:Oh my god, and now, this is really bad. I'm not guessing anymore. I'm almost halfway. What? Tell me.
Pamela Seda:Taurus.
Vanessa Vakharia:No way.
Pamela Seda:I'm the bull.
Vanessa Vakharia:David's a Taurus.
David Kochberg:I
Vanessa Vakharia:could tell. I could tell. Could you?
Pamela Seda:You were never gonna guess.
Vanessa Vakharia:I was not going to get to Taurus. I was not going to get there. Okay, well, you know what? You win some, you lose most. Final two questions of the podcast
Howie Hua:like, you can't divide by seven mentally really well. Like, you can't tell if a number is divisible by seven readily versus, like, all of the other single digit divisibility rules are so easy. Seven's just way too hard to do mentally,
Vanessa Vakharia:I've never thought about it this way. You're looking at like the functionality of the number.
Howie Hua:Yeah
Vanessa Vakharia:I'm looking at like the aesthetic of the number. Like, seven is like a fucking wild ride. Oh my god, this reminds me that I'm going to guess your sign. Because I was about to be like, I feel seven is a very Gemini number. Don't make a facial expression. You're already doing it! What sign are you? What sign are you? Okay, just don't tell me. You hate seven. I love seven. I don't feel like you're a Gemini, but now I'm like, are you a Gemini? Don't say anything. Are you an air sign? Are you a water sign? You're not an earth sign. You're not a fire sign, in my opinion. I think you're an air sign. I think you're a Gemini. Are you a Gemini?
Howie Hua:Do you want me to answer?
Vanessa Vakharia:Yes
Howie Hua:No, I'm not a gemini.
Vanessa Vakharia:Yeah. Hold on. Hold on. Are you an Aquarius?
Howie Hua:No.
Vanessa Vakharia:Are you a Libra?
Howie Hua:I'm not a Libra.
Vanessa Vakharia:What the fuck, Howie? What are you?
Howie Hua:I'm a Leo.
Vanessa Vakharia:No, you're not. I don't know what to say. I did not see this coming, literally at all. okay, fine. I mean, I think Gemini, I think a 7 is a very Gemini number, and I feel like, what do you like, an 8?
Howie Hua:What number do I like?
Vanessa Vakharia:Yeah
Howie Hua:8? 8's nice. out of like, any number, I think 16 or 24. I really like even numbers.
Vanessa Vakharia:So 8, but multiples of 8?
Howie Hua:Yeah. I would say that. I'm an August birthday, so 8 is nice.
Vanessa Vakharia:That's what I'm saying, and the Leo card, the Leo tarot card is an 8.
Howie Hua:Oh, okay.
Vanessa Vakharia:Would you let me read your birth chart?
Zak Champagne:Okay. I, I'm going to show my cards here. I don't know what a birth chart is. What, what is that? Can
Vanessa Vakharia:Do you know your exact time of birth?
Zak Champagne:Uh, I can think, I think, I think my
Vanessa Vakharia:So a birth chart is like the astrological snapshot of where the planets were at the moment you were born and it actually is like your personality or like with the predictions if you believed in astrology, so when you're like, I'm a Leo, I'm like Zak whatever, you're a Leo Sun. The Sun was in Leo when you were born, but where was your moon? Where was Mercury? Where was Pluto? What your Ascendant? Where is your Chiron? It's like the full picture of who you are astrologically and all I'm saying is Crystal let me read hers.
Zak Champagne:Yeah. She's better than me. I get it. I believe I agree. And I agree with you.
Vanessa Vakharia:Okay, you ever want a reading though, let me know. I'm happy to do it. I need to practice more on people.
Zak Champagne:Ok.
Vanessa Vakharia:I think that's probably so relatable to teachers. And like, sorry, just pause. Kyle, are you an Aries?
Kyle Pearce:No, I'm a Pisces.
Vanessa Vakharia:Huh. Okay. So my question is when you're like in there and you're like, okay.
Kyle Pearce:Interesting.
Vanessa Vakharia:Like,
Kyle Pearce:Now I'm like going to start Googling. I'm a fact finder too. So I'm going to try to figure out why the response there, what
Vanessa Vakharia:Okay. So, so,
Kyle Pearce:I love it. I didn't know that about me.
Vanessa Vakharia:Well, now you know that about yourself, the Aries Pisces. Okay, so before we get off, let's guess Jon sign just so you don't feel left out. I am, it's a tough one. I'm getting, I'm getting maybe earth sign vibes from you, but I, I actually really don't know. I don't know what you are, but I'm going to, I'm going to go on a limb and I'm going to guess Taurus.
Jon Orr:That's correct.
Vanessa Vakharia:Fuck off. Yes. Okay. So 50%. Okay. That was loud.
Kyle Pearce:That is amazing.
Vanessa Vakharia:Thank you so much. I'm, I'm
Kyle Pearce:I have to go read my horoscope now. Cause I'm like, I'm like, I don't know what it means
Vanessa Vakharia:Well, Pisces is like, super flowy, really easy going, likes to try new things, like, Jon's a little more like, slow and steady, like, takes some time to come to it, you
Jon Orr:You've described us.
Vanessa Vakharia:Okay, well, we'll talk about this more later. I have to guess. Are you a Leo?
Dr. India White:No.
Vanessa Vakharia:Wait, then hold on. I have one more guess. I have one more guess. Aries.
Dr. India White:Gemini.
Vanessa Vakharia:No way! So am I!
Dr. India White:Really?
Vanessa Vakharia:A fellow Gemini.
Dr. India White:yes, yes.
Vanessa Vakharia:I didn't see it. Wow. Okay.
Dr. India White:It's interesting you saw Leo, I didn't see that.
Vanessa Vakharia:Because your sun sign is like your core essence, like, do you, do you have a birth chart? Like, have you ever looked into this?
Dr. India White:I haven't looked into it.
Vanessa Vakharia:I would bet, do you know your exact birth time?
Dr. India White:Nine o'clock a. m.
Vanessa Vakharia:Can I look right now? I bet you your rising sign is, it's Leo or Aries, like I, I, I just, I want to see your rising sign is how you present to the world. So your sun sign is like what you know, like your Gemini, it's like your core thing, but your rising sign is how you present. Okay. So hold on. Free birth chart. I just, I need to look this up. Cause I need to know. I really need to. Okay. Okay. So birth chart. Okay. So India.
David Kochberg:We do have another interview coming up.
Vanessa Vakharia:Hold on, we're almost done. I'm not, I just want to see your rising sign. Okay, here we go. What?! Hold on everyone. I need to like just give me a second. We do have time!
David Kochberg:We actually don't.
Vanessa Vakharia:When's the next interview?
David Kochberg:In 20 minutes.
Vanessa Vakharia:20 minutes. Fuck. Okay. Hold on one second.
David Kochberg:And I gotta make sure that this uploads.
Vanessa Vakharia:We will, we will I just I really want to see where what we're where just i'm so close to look to seeing the circle of the chart. Just one sec Just one sec India i'm so sorry. I know you have to okay. Here it is. Here it is. Here it is was right! I was right! Leo Rising! I knew it! Very excited for you
Dr. India White:Rock star.
Vanessa Vakharia:This is a huge deal! Okay, fine, you can go. Love you! Do you believe in astrology? Do you believe in destiny?
Dan Finkel:I do not. But,
Vanessa Vakharia:oh, okay.
Dan Finkel:but that's okay.
Vanessa Vakharia:Okay, but I'm gonna guess your sign anyway. I'm guessing by the way we're interacting,
Dan Finkel:Uh huh.
Vanessa Vakharia:I want to say Libra or Aquarius.
Dan Finkel:Pisces. But good good guesses.
Vanessa Vakharia:I'm not shocked. Like if you were like, a Virgo, I'd be like, no you're not. Okay.
Dan Finkel:Water sign.
Vanessa Vakharia:Yeah, water sign. Pisces is like one of my favorite signs. They're just go with the flow. They are, Pisces are always up for anything.
Dan Finkel:Oh, good. Well, there we are. That fits.
Pamela Seda:I wrote a dissertation and I still hate writing. the only thing I like to write is my name on the back of a cheque. I don't mind.
Vanessa Vakharia:that is the most Taurus thing you could have said, by the way. Taurus ruled by Venus, money, okay.
